How I Got Rid of My Adult Acne

How I Got Rid of My Adult Acne

Throughout my younger years (up until the age of 26) I had what some would call great skin. Thanks to YouTube, I developed a love for makeup. I wore everything except foundation and on the few occasions that I did wear foundation, it was mostly to test new products or because I was going for a specific look that required me to wear it. I felt pretty lucky, especially when seeing commercials on TV showing teens how to get rid of problem skin. In fact, I secretly use to wish I had a reason to buy all of those products, which at the time seemed so cool.

During this stage of great skin, I used the cheapest face wash and sometimes just water. Yes, you read that right. Basically, it didn’t matter what I put on my face, I assumed I was lucky and would never have to worry about skincare until a couple years later. Boy was I wrong.

When I turned 26, my lifestyle got pretty chaotic when I decided to work 7 days a week. Where I use to eat healthy meals 6 days out of the week, this became maybe 2 days if I was lucky. Where I use to work out 4 days a week, this became maybe once every 2 weeks. I’m sure you get the idea, life changed and my skin suffered. Badly.

I tried almost every product I could find in the pharmacy but nothing worked. So I decided it was time to go to the doctor. Sadly, I found out the hard way that I was allergic to the main ingredient found in 90% of acne treatments, Benzoyl peroxide. My face blew up like a football with the slightest dab of it. I was left frustrated and had no idea what to do next.

This is where I began to focus on internal medicine. The foods I was eating, the amount of sleep I was getting. I knew I had to make a big change. I started experimenting with supplements and holistic remedies and homemade face masks. I was amazed at the results. Why hadn’t I done this sooner? But before I turn this blog post into a novel, I’ll jump straight into the things I found ‘most’ effective in helping me get back to healthy glowing skin.

1. Turmeric. If you have read a few of my recipe posts, you will notice that I put Turmeric in as many foods as possible. This powerful yellow root is an anti-inflammatory that kills acne bacteria and removes excess oil from the skin. I used this as a face mask for a while before learning that I could drink it too! A combination of using it internally and externally allowed me to see rapid results. After drinking it for some time, my teeth became a few shades whiter which I hadn’t noticed until my dentist pointed it out. That was an awesome bonus!

2. Baobab Oil. Who would have thought that someone with oily skin could use facial oils? I had no idea. I discovered baobab oil when I went to Senegal (West Africa) for the first time. The baobab tree is sometimes referred to as ‘The Tree of Life’. When I saw the tree for the first time, I was in awe of how beautiful it was. Standing at around 155 feet in height, the trunk has a circumference of around 47 meters. A tree this size is obviously thousands of years old. At first sight, I knew I had to have whatever grew or came out of such powerful tree. And it was right there, thanks to our tour guide I discovered Baobab oil! I had no idea what I was going to use it for, but I knew I had to have it. So I stocked up and took a few bottles back to Canada. It wasn’t until my return home that I decided to try it on my face before bed one night and I was blown away. It wasn’t greasy and absorbed right away. I could feel how happy my skin was after using it. Fast forward 2 years and I am still using it daily before bed.

3. African Black Soap. When I first saw black soap, I was confused. It didn’t look like something I wanted to put on my face. It took some convincing from one of my favorite YouTubers who made a video talking about the awesome ingredients and how it had transformed her skin. Black soap is generally made from locally harvested African plants such as plantain, cocoa pods, palm tree leaves and shea tree bark. The ingredients are sun-dried and roasted, which is how it gets its deep color. Water and oils such as coconut, palm and shea butter are then added. Its 100% natural. Fast forward 2 years and I am still using it daily and recommend it to everyone who has the same skin trouble that I had.

These 3 things in combination with a healthy diet and exercise have transformed my skin. I hope you give all or 1 of them a try.
